5 Tips to be a Happy Runner

Summer is fast approaching, and we all want to be outdoors. Whether you want to keep fit, fresh air, or a dose of vitamin D, it is great to run outdoors. And it's important to run healthy. Increasing your outdoor running miles can increase your risk of injury - but it doesn't have to. Most running injuries are related to overuse, irregularities in training or having biomechanical factors that place increased load on your joints and muscles, or simply a single accident. In t

Brothers in Arms - battling fatigue

The Importance of Hydration By now, I'm sure all of you would've seen this amazing footage of the Brownlee Brothers finishing the triathlon in Mexico. Jonny, leading the race, was struggling with heat stroke in the last few hundred metres of the run when he was assisted to the finish line by his older brother, Alistair. The footage is quite distressing as you could see a visibly ill Jonny on the brink of collapsing. How can you prevent this from happening on a race? These ath

Why do we assess Foot Pressure?

High or uneven pressures through the foot and ankle can lead to pain and injury anywhere from the foot right up to the back. Assessing these pressures is a difficult task - until now. With the RS Scan pressure plate, we at Onebody can see exactly how your foot deals with the pressures of walking and running. Areas of high pressure, or problems with the motion of the foot are easily seen from the pressure plate data. With our expert physio and gait assessment, we can unravel t

Marathon - How to Prevent Injury

We have asked some of our friends/clients who have made it through a marathon to share their top tips. “When training for the London Marathon 2013, I found that my best friend throughout training was my foam roller – which I used daily to stretch out my muscles! Although painful, and at the end of a long day it seemed like the last thing that I wanted to endure, it allowed my muscles and body to recover and remain injury free during my training. One lesson I did learn through

These are 4 great strength exercises for runners. Performed together daily, they help you build strength in hips, knees, and core. Shin Splints - What are they?

A common injury in runners, shin splints can be resolved quickly with the correct diagnosis and treatment. Shin splints is another term for Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS). The pain is felt along the lower third of the tibia or shin bone, on the inner side of the shin. Pain can also be present behind and under the inner/medial ankle bone, and there may be marked sensitivity to touch on the inner edge of the shin bone. Shin splints are often worse at the beginning of a ru

    My Achilles just WENT!!

The Achilles’ tendon connects the calf muscle to the heel. It deals with an enormous amount of strain when we run, jump and walk. And so it is often injured in runners, and in high intensity sports. This week, in our Kensington physiotherapy clinic, we saw a 35 year old man who suddenly started to sprint for the bus – hardly high level athletic activity, but still a huge load on the achilles. “As I took off to catch the bus, I felt a sudden twinge in the back of my heel.
